Instructions Following A Tooth Extraction

1) A gauze pack was placed over the extraction site at the office. This aids in forming a blood clot in the socket, which is the first step in the healing process. If the gauze becomes soaked, you may discard it, and place one of the pieces of gauze that you were given to take with you. The gauze pack should remain in place for approximately 45 minutes. A red tinge of the saliva is normal during the first day. If a steady flow of blood is noticed after removing the pack, then apply a fresh gauze pack for an additional 15 minutes, until the socket clots. If prolonged bleeding is noted, call our office for further instructions.

2) Rest is suggested for the first day. Exertion results in increased heart activity, and may result in prolonged bleeding. Light activity may be performed on the first day as comfortable, after the first 2 hours.

3) Take Tylenol, Advil, Nuprin, Motrin IB or the perscription medication, if given, as needed for discomfort. Mild discomfort is expected during the first day, and most patients will benefit from one of the mild analgesics when the local anesthetic first wears off, and at bedtime. Call our office if any significant discomfort results.

4) Apply ice packs for 15 minutes on, and 15 minutes off, only if instructed, for the first 3 hours. This will minimize the swelling associated with more complicated extractions. Call our office if any significant swelling should result. Mild swelling is normal. If an antibiotic has been perscribed, take it four times evenly spaced over the course of the day. Complete the full course of the antibiotic. If any reactions to the medication are noted, discontinue the medication and call our office.

5) Avoid rinsing for the first day. Eating and drinking are fine, after the first 2 hours. Avoid very tough and chewy foods for the first day. Avoid extremely hot, cold, spicy, and salty food for today. Do not swish when drinking, or use a straw. Chew on the opposite side from the surgery.

6) No smoking today. Smoking breaks down clots, and causes painfull dry sockets!

7)If any questions or problems occur, call our office. Leave a message if we are not in. Your call will be returned the same day.
